Surprises Everywhere – Weekly Photo Challenge

There are all kinds of surprises…

Distraction

Six years ago today I took this picture, and some thing never change.

But the upside to being distractable is that I notice a lot. And a  lot that I see interests and surprises me.

These men – one in Seattle, one in Manhattan – found creative ways to enjoy themselves in the city.

Sometimes though, the city has surprises that are not so appealing.

This rusted out car was abandoned in a park in New York City. And surprisingly, I saw this butterfly nectaring on a wildflower nearby on the same day.

People who are naturally curious find surprises everywhere.  The other day as dusk fell and fog settled over the fields, the lights went on in the greenhouses nearby, captivating me with their eerie glow.

And this afternoon amid the gloom of a cold gray rain, I found fuchsias blooming in Seattle:

And what’s more, I did not burn my toast today. Or my napkin. Surprise!

The Daily Post Weekly Photo Challenge subject this week is “Surprise”.  I could have posted an empty frame – “Surprise!” -  but I think that has limited appeal.  I’m hoping you enjoyed the photographs of just a few surprising things I’ve seen, and you’ll find more at:

  1. I like the man doing the handstand in Seattle. The opposite of jumping for joy.

    • This is funny, but that’s New York – hey, just because it’s raining…actually it rarely pours like that in Seattle, but it happens regularly in NY. Anyway your observation is very funny!

  2. Love this post…the greenhouses, the abandoned car and the handstand all have lots to say.

    • I appreciate your comment – that guy doing the handstand was such a lucky moment to witness. But I guess they all were, maybe even the junked car in the woods.

  3. What a rich (and surprising) visual feast – thank you! I could lose myself looking at that fuchsia :-)

    • Thank you – they’ve never been favorites so I make myself take a picture (the only other bloomers were a few roses, but that’s for another time) – and it turns out it made a luscious photo! They’re planted a lot here in the Seattle area so I’m going to learn to appreciate, if not love them.

  4. I admire the observation.

  7. Paricularly like the butterfly and the greenhouse shot – very nice. And surprises everywhere.

    • Thanks Lynne – glad to hear it as I was a little unsure about the greenhouse – it’s the kind of thing that looks amazing when you’re there but is hard to capture on film.

  11. That’s quite an odyssey you went through in 2012. You must be surprised at having made it through such a varied year.

I was born in Tacoma and grew up on Long Island, but the long winters and overcast skies in those places make me glad I moved to central Texas 36 years ago. Although today happens to be cold and wet here, most of the year there’s warmth, and I can mostly go out into nature whenever I want to. Still, I’d enjoy the chance to do some nature photography in the green of the Pacific Northwest that I never got to know.

    • Interesting, and thanks. Such different parts of the world. I would really like to see Texas, especially the gulf cost, for the birds & tropical feeling, and the area around Marfa for the art and emptiness. I’m going to check out your blog now!
